AI Characters
Learn what makes up an AI character, what you can update, and how private and public characters differ.

An AI character is the identity behind an AI companion. It defines who the companion is, how they speak and behave, what they look like, and the world around them.
The same character is used across text chats, roleplay, voice messages, calls, images, and other experiences. A clear and detailed character profile helps these interactions feel consistent.
What is inside an AI character?
When you create an AI character, you provide:
- A name
- A short description or idea
- Optional details such as gender, age, and species
- A realistic or anime visual style
- An optional reference image
- A voice
ImagiPortal uses this information to build a more complete character profile. The profile can include:
- Identity: name, gender, age, species, and occupation
- Background: history, goals, skills, interests, relationships, and conflicts
- Personality: traits, strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and preferences
- Appearance: body, eyes, outfit, avatar, and other visual details
- Conversation style: speech, catchphrases, first message, and example dialogue
- World: setting, location, scenario, world description, and world image
- Voice: the voice used for voice messages and calls
If you leave optional details blank during creation, ImagiPortal can generate them from your description.
What can you change later?
Most parts of a private character can be updated as the character develops.

Choose the character's gender and age carefully. These two details are fixed after creation for regular creators.
Editing a profile can change how the character behaves in future conversations. It does not create a new character or remove the existing history with that character. The Edit AI Character Profile chapter explains how to make changes in more detail.
Private and public characters
Every new character starts as private.
- A private character belongs to its creator and is not shown in the Arena. The creator can interact with it, test it, and continue improving it.
- A public character can appear in the Arena, where other users can discover and interact with it. Public characters can grow an audience and earn royalties for their creators.
A character must go through the publication process before it becomes public. While it is waiting for review, its profile cannot be edited. A published character is also locked for editing. To make changes, the creator must first unpublish it.
