Chat and Memory
Understand chat modes, conversation history, and the global memory shared between one user and one AI character.
Updated July 25, 2026
Each conversation has its own chat history. Global Memory connects useful context across separate chats and voice calls with the same AI character.
This helps the character continue a relationship or story without requiring you to repeat every important detail.
Chat and Roleplay
When you start a new conversation, choose one of two modes:
| Mode | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Chat | Direct messages, similar to a normal messenger conversation | Everyday conversation, questions, advice, and assistance |
| Roleplay | Dialogue combined with actions, expressions, setting, and story details | Fictional scenes, adventures, and continuing stories |
The mode belongs to that individual chat. You can start another chat with a different mode at any time.
Read First Chat, Voice Message, and Call for examples of both modes.
Chat history and Global Memory are different
Chat history contains the messages inside one conversation. Opening an existing chat lets you continue from its visible message history.
Global Memory is a shorter, organized record of useful context from interactions with the same character. It can connect information across:
- Separate Chat conversations
- Separate Roleplay conversations
- Voice calls
- Video calls
Global Memory does not copy every previous message into a new chat. ImagiPortal keeps a summary and selected details that may be useful later.
One memory for each user and character
Global Memory belongs to one specific relationship:
- One user and one character share one Global Memory.
- A different user has a separate memory with the same public character.
- Your memory with one character is not shared with another character.
- A character creator does not use one user's personal memory for everyone else.
For example, if you tell a public companion about your upcoming trip, that information can become part of your memory with that companion. Another user who talks to the same companion will not inherit your trip details.
What can Global Memory contain?
Memory is organized into a shared summary and four categories:
| Memory area | What it contains | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Shared Summary | A short overview of your continuing relationship or story | You and the character are investigating a missing research vessel |
| Facts | Useful details that should remain consistent | The user works night shifts |
| Relationships | How people relate to each other and how the relationship has developed | Trust improved after an apology |
| User Preferences | Things the user likes, dislikes, or prefers | The user prefers shorter replies late at night |
| Ongoing Threads | Plans, questions, or storylines that are not finished | Planning an in-story weekend meeting |
ImagiPortal updates this compact memory over time. The Memory Manager shows when it was last synchronized and whether more replies have happened since that update.
Use Global Memory in a new chat
When starting a new chat, the Use Global Memory switch is on by default.
Leave it on when you want:
- The relationship to continue across conversations
- Earlier facts and preferences to remain useful
- A roleplay story to remember important past events
- Context from a previous call to carry into a later chat
Turn it off when you want:
- A fresh conversation
- A separate roleplay scenario
- A chat that does not use or add to the shared memory
Turning Global Memory off for a new chat does not delete the memory you already have. It only keeps that particular chat separate. It also does not change the character's personality or profile.
Manage Global Memory
You can review and correct your memory with a character:
- Open the character's profile.
- Open Tools and Memory.
- Find Memory Management.
- Select Open Memory Manager.
The Memory Manager lets you:
- Edit the shared summary
- Add or remove facts
- Add or remove relationship details
- Add or remove user preferences
- Add or remove ongoing threads
- Reload the latest synchronized memory
- Save your changes
To add an item, type one entry and press Enter or select Add. Use the remove control beside an entry to delete it. Select Save Memory when you finish.
These changes affect only the memory between you and that character.
Character profile and memory are different
The character profile defines who the character is: personality, background, speech, appearance, and world. For a public character, this identity is shared by everyone who interacts with it.
Global Memory holds context about one user's relationship and past interactions with that character.
Editing the character profile does not remove your chat history or Global Memory. Editing Global Memory does not change the character's base identity for other users.
When should you correct memory?
Review the Memory Manager when:
- A stored fact is wrong or no longer true
- Two entries contradict each other
- An old preference is no longer useful
- A finished storyline still appears as ongoing
- You want to add an important detail directly
Keep entries short and clear. Store information that will help future interactions rather than a complete transcript of everything that happened.
