Create AI Character

Follow the six steps to create a private AI character, from the first idea to the first chat or call.

Updated July 25, 2026

The character creator turns a simple idea into a complete AI character with a profile, avatar, world, and optional voice.

You do not need to write every detail yourself. Give ImagiPortal a clear starting idea, and it will build the first draft for you. You can refine most details later.

Before you start

You must be signed in to create a character.

Character creation is a paid feature for regular users and is included with an active subscription. The app shows the current access requirement before you begin. See Plans and Subscriptions for pricing information.

To begin, select Create AI Character from the app.

Step 1: Character name and identity

Start with the basic identity:

  • Character name: Required. Use between 2 and 100 characters.
  • Gender: Optional. Choose Female, Male, or Other / Non-binary. You can enter a custom gender identity when you choose Other / Non-binary.
  • Age: Optional. If you add an age, the character must be 18 or older.
  • Species: Optional. This can be Human, Elf, Android, or anything else that fits your idea.

If you leave gender, age, or species blank, ImagiPortal can generate the missing details from your description.

Choose the age and gender carefully. Regular creators cannot change these two details after the character is created.

Step 2: Describe the character

Write a short description of who the character is. The description must contain at least 30 characters and can contain up to 5,000 characters.

Useful details include:

  • Appearance
  • Personality and speaking style
  • Role, occupation, or skills
  • Backstory
  • Goals and motivations
  • The world or setting where the character lives
  • The kind of relationship or experience you want the character to offer

For example:

A noir detective with a worn trench coat, dry humor, and a haunted past. She lives in a rain-soaked city and is trying to expose a corrupt council.

You can write naturally. ImagiPortal uses the description to create a fuller profile with details such as personality, appearance, background, speech, scenario, and world.

Add a reference image

A reference image is optional. It helps guide the character's first avatar and visual identity.

Only upload an image that you have the right to use. The image and character description are checked against the platform's content rules before creation begins.

Step 3: Choose the visual style

Choose one of two visual styles:

  • Realistic: Creates a lifelike visual identity.
  • Anime: Creates an illustrated anime-style identity.

Then choose the image model:

  • True: The default choice and the best option for consistent character images.
  • Wild: An experimental option for more unusual or imaginative visual ideas.

These choices guide the first avatar and world image. You can update visual details and regenerate images later from the character tools.

Step 4: Generate the first draft

ImagiPortal first checks the description, then creates:

  • A complete character profile
  • A first avatar
  • A world and world image

The generation screen shows the progress of each part. When everything is ready, select Continue to voice.

Your first result is a draft. You can improve the text and regenerate visual assets later instead of trying to make every detail perfect on the first attempt.

Step 5: Choose a voice

Voice setup is optional. You can search the voice library by name, style, accent, or tone, listen to samples, and save the voice that fits the character.

The selected voice becomes the character's default voice for voice messages and live calls.

If you are not ready to choose, select Skip for now. You can add or change the voice later in the character tools.

Step 6: Launch the character

When creation is complete, the character is added to My Characters as a private character. It is not published in the Arena.

From the final screen, you can:

  • Start a text chat or roleplay
  • Start a live call
  • Open Manage AI Character to review and improve the profile

After creation

Try a short conversation to see whether the character's personality and speaking style match your idea. If something feels wrong, update the private character before publishing it.
