Live Voice and Video Calls

Talk with an AI companion in real time through a voice-only call or a video call with a live character avatar.

Updated July 25, 2026

Live calls let you speak with an AI companion in real time. Choose a Voice only call when you want an audio conversation, or choose a Video call when you also want to see the companion's talking visual avatar.

Unlike generated video scenes and clips, live calls are interactive. You do not prepare a fixed message or wait for finished media. You speak naturally, the companion responds, and the conversation continues live.

ExperienceWhat happens
Voice-only callYou and the AI companion have a live audio conversation
Video callYou have the same live conversation with a talking character avatar
Video sceneA previously written message becomes a generated talking video
Video clipA written idea or image becomes a short generated video with scene sound

Read Video Scenes and Clips for the generated-video workflows.

Before starting a call

For the best experience, check that:

  • Your internet connection is stable
  • Your microphone is available
  • Your browser or device allows microphone access
  • The character has a supported voice
  • Your speakers or headphones are working

Using headphones can reduce echo and make the companion easier to hear.

Your own camera is not needed for a voice-only call. In a video call, it remains optional and starts off.

Start a live call

  1. Open an AI companion's profile.
  2. Select Start call.
  3. Under Choose Call Mode, select Voice only or Video call.
  4. Select Continue.
  5. Review the companion's voice option when it is shown.
  6. If you chose video, prepare the call avatar when the app asks.
  7. Allow microphone access if your browser or device asks for it.
  8. Select Start Call.
  9. Wait while the connection is prepared.

Begin speaking after the call shows that it is connected. Speak in a normal voice and leave a short pause when you finish so the companion can respond.

Voice-only calls

A voice-only call is a live audio conversation without a talking visual avatar. The companion listens and responds using the selected voice while the character's image remains on the call screen.

Choose Voice only when:

  • You want a simple audio conversation
  • You do not need a live character animation
  • You are using a slower connection
  • You want to reduce the amount of data used by the call

A voice-only call still uses the companion's identity, personality, voice, and Global Memory. It is different from a recorded voice message because both sides speak and respond live.

Video calls

A video call adds the companion's talking visual avatar to the live audio conversation. The avatar moves and speaks while the companion responds.

Choose Video call when:

  • You want a more visual and immersive conversation
  • You want to see the companion speak and react
  • Your connection can support the live avatar
  • You may want to share your own camera

The video mode can need more connection capacity than voice only. If the avatar loads slowly or the call becomes unstable, end the session and try Voice only.

Choose the voice for a call

Both call modes use a character voice. The character's saved voice is the recommended option, and you can preview it before starting.

The call screen may also let you search the voice library and choose another voice for that session. A library choice made here affects the current call; it does not replace the active voice saved in the character's Voice Studio.

If the character's saved voice is no longer supported, select a supported library voice or ask the character's creator to update it.

Read Voice Studio to learn how creators manage a character's active voice.

The video call avatar

This section applies only to video calls.

The video call avatar is the visual version of the companion used during a live video session. It is prepared from the character's main avatar and focuses more closely on the face so speech and expressions are easier to see.

If a character does not have a video call avatar yet, the app may offer two choices:

  • Generate Avatar: prepare a dedicated image for video calls
  • Skip for now: continue using the available character image

Generating a call avatar may take a moment. You can start the call after it is ready.

Prepare an avatar for a character you created

Creators can prepare the call avatar before a session:

  1. Open the character's profile.
  2. Open Visual Assets.
  3. Select Video call.
  4. Select Create Video Avatar or Regenerate Video Avatar.

The call avatar is cropped from the main avatar. To make a larger change to the character's appearance, update the main avatar first and then regenerate the video avatar.

The video avatar cannot be regenerated while the character is public or waiting for publication review. Unpublish the character before changing it.

Read Avatars for more about the character's visual identity.

Controls during a call

The available controls depend on the mode:

ControlVoice onlyVideo callWhat it does
TranscriptionYesYesShows or hides live text from the conversation
MicrophoneYesYesMutes or unmutes your microphone
CameraNoYesTurns your camera sharing on or off
End callYesYesDisconnects and finishes the session

The transcription panel displays the conversation as live text. It can help when audio is difficult to hear.

During a video call, your camera is off when the call begins. If you turn it on, a preview shows what you are sharing. Turn it off again whenever you do not want to share camera video.

Switch between call modes

You choose Voice only or Video call before connecting. The mode cannot be changed inside an active session.

To switch:

  1. End the current call.
  2. Start a new call from the companion's profile.
  3. Select the other call mode.
  4. Continue and reconnect.

Both modes use the same companion and Global Memory, so changing the call mode does not create a different relationship.

Live calls and Global Memory

Voice and video calls use the same Global Memory shared between you and that AI companion. Relevant context from earlier chats and calls can help the companion continue the relationship or story.

After a call, useful context from the conversation can be added to that shared memory. This does not mean that every sentence is copied into every future conversation. ImagiPortal keeps useful details and brings them back when they are relevant.

The memory remains separate for each user and character pair. Your call history with one companion is not automatically shared with another companion or another user.

Read Chat and Memory for a complete explanation.

End a call normally

Use End call before closing the page. This disconnects the microphone, optional camera, and live session correctly.

If a call ends because the connection is lost, return to the companion's profile and start a new one. The previous live session cannot be resumed from the exact point where it disconnected.

If a call does not work

Try these steps for either mode:

  1. Confirm that your internet connection is stable.
  2. Check that microphone permission is allowed for ImagiPortal.
  3. Make sure another app is not using the microphone.
  4. Check that the character has a supported voice.
  5. End the call and start a new one.
  6. Refresh the app if the call screen does not reconnect.

For a video call, also try:

  • Keep your own camera off
  • Wait for the live avatar to finish loading
  • Close other apps that are using the camera
  • Start a new call using Voice only

Read Chat, Memory, Voice, and Call Problems if the problem continues.

Privacy and permissions

Microphone access is required for both voice and video calls.

Camera access is not required for voice-only calls. It is also optional during a video call and is requested only when you choose to share your own video.

Only allow these permissions on a device you trust. You can remove microphone or camera permission later from your browser or device settings.

Read Photos, Voice, Camera, and Generated Media for more information about personal data and media.

Access and pricing

Live calls are paid features for regular users. An active subscription includes voice-call access and a video-call allowance. Further video-call usage may require payment.

The app shows the current access and balance requirement before or during a call. Current amounts and included usage are listed only on Plans and Subscriptions.
